What’s Around On Nut and Phra Khanong: A Tenant’s Guide

Most listings tell you an apartment is “in a prime location”. Here is what is actually around ours, with walking times, so you can decide whether the area suits how you live.

The station is the whole point

Our apartment on Soi Sukhumvit 48 is 530 m from BTS Phra Khanong — about seven minutes on foot. From there the line puts Thong Lo one stop away, Asok in roughly eight minutes and Siam in about fifteen. On Nut is one stop in the other direction.

That matters more than it sounds. Bangkok traffic makes a three-kilometre taxi ride a forty-minute problem at the wrong hour. Living inside walking distance of the BTS is the difference between planning your day around traffic and ignoring it.

Everyday shopping

Big C Extra at On Nut is the full weekly shop — groceries, household goods, a pharmacy and a food court, open late. For smaller runs there are 7-Elevens on nearly every corner of the soi, and a Tesco Lotus Express within a few minutes’ walk.

The Phra Khanong fresh market, a short walk from the station, is where you go for produce, fish and cooked food at Thai prices rather than expat ones. It is busiest early in the morning and worth seeing at least once even if you end up shopping at Big C.

Eating

W District, near Phra Khanong, is an open-air food and drink complex — street-food stalls, bars and seating, busiest in the evening. It is the easy answer to “where do we eat tonight” when you do not want to travel.

Beyond that, the sois around Sukhumvit 48 and 50 are full of small Thai restaurants and noodle shops, most of them cheaper and better than anything on the main road. Thong Lo, one BTS stop away, covers the other end of the scale: coffee, Japanese food and the city’s densest concentration of restaurants where a meal costs what it would in Europe.

Working

True Digital Park at Punnawithi, two stops away, is the largest tech campus in the city — co-working floors, cafés and a mall attached. Habito Mall sits beside it. If you work remotely and want somewhere to go two days a week that is not your apartment, that is the obvious answer.

That said, our apartments are set up so you do not have to: a proper desk, an office chair, an external monitor and fibre at 500+ Mbps.

Exercise and green space

The building has a pool, a gym and a garden with a jogging track, which covers most days. For a longer run, Benjakitti Park at Asok is a short BTS ride and has a proper running loop.

Practical things

Clinics, dentists and pharmacies are scattered along Sukhumvit, with larger hospitals a short ride away. Laundry shops on the soi charge by the kilo if you would rather not use the washing machine in the apartment. There is a covered car park in the building if you drive, though most of our tenants do not.

Is this area right for you?

Phra Khanong and On Nut suit people who want to live in Bangkok rather than visit it: residential sois, local prices, quick BTS access, and Thong Lo’s restaurants close enough to reach in ten minutes but far enough that you do not pay Thong Lo rent.

If you want nightlife directly outside your door, or a Sukhumvit address for its own sake, other parts of the city will suit you better.

Our apartment on Soi Sukhumvit 48 is available now at 26,500 THB a month, everything included, on a 30-night minimum. See Apartments for details, or ask us anything about the area before you book.

If you’re looking in this area, we let two furnished one-bedroom apartments here: Aspire Sukhumvit 48 in Phra Khanong and Regent Home Sukhumvit 81 in On Nut. Both are rented direct by the owner, with electricity, water and wifi included.
